1929 – George Mitchell Wedding Photo
George Thomas Mitchell made his debut for Dewsbury on 20th March 1926 v Leeds.
His final game was on 22nd April 1929 v Castleford – in that time he played 106 games and scored 1 try.
George died later that year, aged only 23, on August 18, 1929, in a sanatorium in Whitley, near Dewsbury. George had been injured in a match on Christmas Day 1928 against Wakefield Trinity which put him out of the game for a while, before returning to the first team at the end of the 1928/29 season. Sadly, his health then deteriorated, and he died, leaving a widow and young son. His popularity was confirmed by the crowds lining the route of his funeral procession to Thornhill churchyard.
