1969. By now the basis of the Championship winning team was in place and the club records show a much-improved team.
1972/73. The Crown Flatt men had established themselves as the form team, albeit still the underdogs when pitted against Warrington in the penultimate match of the season. Against all expectations the small-town team beat the giants of Warrington led by Alex Murphy. Two weeks later, at the Championship Final, Dewsbury beat Leeds at Odsal. 5,000 people packed the area outside the town hall to welcome the victorious team to an official reception.
Mick Stephenson was praised in particular for his role in the victory – interest from Australian RL soon followed and he left the club soon after to sign for Penrith.
