1914 Lance Todd Record Transfer Fee
Lancelot Beaumont “Lance” Todd (26 May 1883 – 14 November 1942) was a New Zealand-born rugby league footballer and manager of the early 20th century. As a player, he represented New Zealand in 1907 and 1908 and played in England for the Wigan and Dewsbury clubs. His name eventually becoming synonymous with the Challenge Cup and the Lance Todd Trophy.
In 1914, after a period with Wigan, where he was an outstanding centre, (making 186 appearances) he transferred, unexpectedly, to Dewsbury for a fee of £450 – a huge fee at the time. He made 10 appearances for Dewsbury in the 1913-14 season but left Dewsbury at the start of during the First World War to serve with the ANZACs.
