1944 Sydney Lightfoot Collection- Blazer Patch Dewsbury Batley Referees Badge

Sydney Lightfoot only played one game for Dewsbury in 1944 –where he was described as a “promising youngster” albeit somewhat “impetuous.” He played alongside a the great Vic Hey and Jimmy Ledgard. He was injured during the match which meant he wouldn’t play for Dewsbury again (although he went on to play for Batley and won the league championships with Huddersfield in 1949.)

When he finished his playing career, Sydney went on to be a referee – continuing his involvement with the game for many years.

Sydney was a Dewsbury supporter though and would continue to follow Dewsbury and keep photos/ newspaper clippings about the club throughout his life – we are indebted to his grandson Martyn Simpson for this collection.
