Mick Sullivan Honoured 2
In October 2009. Mike Sullivan was honoured at a Rugby League legend at the George Hotel. Mick famously played for Great Britain (he set the record for the most appearances for the Great Britain Lions with 46. This record has been matched (by Garry Schofield) but never overtaken and he also holds the record for the most rugby league test match tries by a player of any nationality with 44) but in his role as player-coach at Dewsbury, he would lead the team to a Challenge Cup semi-final against St Helens. The match would remembered for Dewsbury’s tenacious play but also for the now infamous interruption of Minnie Cotton.
Although he was only 5 feet 10 inches (1.78 metres) tall, Sullivan combined speed and agility and was a powerful tackler. He was also known for his sense of fun: he once defused a tense situation when he stopped play to peel and eat an orange that had been thrown at him by opposing fans in the stands.
Mick passed away in 2016
